Getting EPDs right

Short, technical explainers on the questions specifiers and procurers ask most. Written for people who have to defend the numbers.

Can you compare two EPDs?

ISO 14025 sets strict conditions for comparability: the same product category and declared unit, equivalent system boundaries, data quality, allocation and calculation rules, and the same validity period. EN 15804 goes further and requires comparison at building level, or at sub-building level only when the excluded parts genuinely perform identically. In practice, two concrete EPDs are comparable only after you have converted both to a common functional unit, checked that transport and end-of-life modules are treated the same way, and confirmed that biogenic carbon and carbonation are handled consistently.

Where uncertainty comes from

Every EPD result carries uncertainty: measurement uncertainty in plant data, variability between production periods and sites, choices in background datasets, and the modelling assumptions written into the PCR. This is why a common methodology matters more than a single decimal place. Using one pre-verified sector model across your plants removes the largest source of unexplained variation, so differences you see between products are real rather than methodological.
